Welcome

Cattistock is in a beautiful setting
A picture postcard village

Welcome to Cattistock, a classic English village, situated just 10 miles north of Dorchester and nestling in the Dorset hills at the heart of Hardy country. The Parish of Cattistock includes the hamlets of Sandhills and Chalmington and for the purpose of this website the neighbouring village of Chilfrome.

Cattistock, mentioned as “Ertacomestock” in the Domesday Book, grew and blossomed with the arrival of the Hunt in the early 19th Century. Now in the 21st Century Cattistock enjoys reputation as a thriving, active community and an eagerly sought after place to live. Patrick Moore, the astronomer, was so charmed by the Village and its unspoiled tranquility, that he even published a commemorative booklet: “The Night Sky Over Cattistock”.

The beautiful church, which features in ‘Britain’s 1,000 Best Churches’, boasts a William Morris window and a remarkably impressive tower. The Community Space is a great meeting area with a children’s play area and together with the Savill Hall has become the place where most village activities are based. There is something for everyone in the village, including a Lawn Tennis Club, an active Cricket Club, and a Football Club, not to mentions skittles, badminton, short mat bowls, table tennis and plenty more, plus no less than 30 gardens open for the “Open Gardens” weekend. It’s not bad for a village of fewer than 500 souls!
